Causes of Bloating
Certain Foods can cause Bloating
The causes of bloating vary among individuals. However, often it is the result of gas produced from eating specific foods. Some individuals don’t digest certain foods well and there are specific foods such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts and asparagus that are also known to produce excessive amounts of gas. Additionally, bloating can be caused by medical conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome which was once called “spastic colon”.
How Gas and Constipation Cause Bloating
Gas is probably the biggest culprit of bloating. It can make a person feel full even if they haven’t eaten a great deal, simply if the foods they ate produced a large amount of gas. Foods don’t produce the gas until they start being processed in the digestive tract and by then there’s no turning back—whatever gas is going to be expelled from the process is going to be made. At that point, the gas has to go somewhere and until it reaches the surface either by burping or flatulence, it can cause that bloated, uncomfortable feeling.
Constipation can also cause bloat as stool is backed up in the intestines. Additionally, the hard stool can be trapping in the gases, putting pressure on the colon because it can’t escape. Irritable Bowel Syndrome can also cause bloating as the erratic contractions of the colon muscles move then trap gas along various parts of the colon. Diarrhea can also cause bloating since the same virus or bacteria that caused the diarrhea may also be producing more and excessive amounts of gases as they attack foods.
So, to give any one particular cause of bloating is not possible. It may simply because you ate too much, or perhaps you ate too fast and sucked in too much air, or your system simply is having a hard time digesting certain foods you ate. The good news is that normally, bloating doesn’t last long and it can often be relieved by taking a walk around the block.
